This glossary will describe words that are related to the medical field, more specifically in diagnostic imaging.

radiography

The process or occupation of taking radiographs to assist in medical examinations.
Example: Because Radiography has a strong clinically-based component, radiographic course work does not necessarily fit within the formal academic calendar.

A person who uses X-rays or other high-energy radiation, especially a doctor specializing in radiology.
Example: He hears the radiologist commenting to his assistants, in technical language.

Concerned with the diagnosis of illness or other problems.
Example: A comparative analysis of diagnostic studies in Ghana.

Medical imaging refers to several different technologies that are used to view the human body in order to diagnose, monitor, or treat medical conditions.
Example: Positron emission tomography (PET) is a medical imaging technique that has become a valuable diagnostic tool.

A person employed to look after technical equipment or do practical work in a laboratory.
Example: The database contains names of registered Medical Technologists in Quebec.

noun
A disease, illness or injury; any physiologic, mental or psychological condition or disorder.
Example: Despite the improvement in his medical condition, Mr was still suffering from a significantly reduced level of mobility.

A malignant growth or tumor resulting from the division of abnormal cells.
Example: Her father died of oesophageal cancer.

The emission of energy as electromagnetic waves or as moving subatomic particles, especially high-energy particles which cause ionization.
Example: Rutherford soon found Beta radiation to be electrons; alpha radiation was something rather different, it has a mass four times that of hydrogen and a charge double that of the electron but positive.

Sound or other vibrations having an ultrasonic frequency, particularly as used in medical imaging.
Example: A mass in Mary's appendix was detected and investigated using ultrasound.

Example: The symptoms naturally causes dehydration and thirst in the patient.

An amount of ionizing radiation received or absorbed at one time or over a specified period.
Example: A dose of radiation exceeding safety limits.

magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
noun
A medical imaging technique that uses a magnetic field and computer-generated radio waves to create detailed images of the organs and tissues in your body.
Example: MRIs are very useful for examining the brain and spinal cord

A technique for displaying a representation of a cross section through a human body or other solid object using X-rays or ultrasound.
Example: For patients in whom ischaemic stroke has been confirmed by computerised tomography scan, aspirin administered within 48 hours of the onset of stroke significantly reduces death.

Example: The projection of the elbow is big because of it's bad placement.
